Contract Nursery Specialising in Indigenous Plant Tubestock for the Central Coast of NSW, Australia
Business Profile
Organic Matters is a multi-faceted business revolving around the core products that are healthy, weed free, Indigenous Plant Tubestock. As more and more local government organisations realised that provenance was an important issue with a lot of the plantings within their control it became very apparent that the nursery industry (in general) is not interested in this market &/or does not take enough care with matters of provenance.

The proprietor, Mark Snodgrass is a reformed Horticulturist who has worked in the field of Bush Regeneration since 1988 and knows how hard it can be to source quality Indigenous plants for projects. In 1996 he started ‘Organic Matters’, a specialist nursery business, growing indigenous native tubestock for LandCare groups.

Growing healthy provenance plants that are hardened off for the conditions to which they will return is important for regeneration work so Organic Matters only grows for clients on the central coastal strip of NSW. If your site is along the coastal strip (up to 30kms inland depending on local climate), Newcastle to Sydney, Organic Matters can go to your site, collect seed and plant material, take it back to the nursery and grow it into tubestock which can then be delivered back to the site from which it came. If your site is more inland we may be able to recommend another grower, more appropriate to that site.

Products and services provided by Organic Matters are;

• Indigenous, provenance plant tubestock. Each plant is inspected before dispatch so that only healthy weed free specimens are delivered.

• Facilitation of local group working days, providing physical and technical help to volunteers at a personal level.

• slow release fertilizer appropriate for planting native tubestock.

• Planter’s Information Packs containing profile sheets for each of the species contained in each shipment (small additional charge).

• Delivery to site (charge if required).

• Tool kits specifically designed for bush regenerators to have a low impact on the user and cause minimum disturbance to the environment.

• Training courses in relation to bush regeneration for volunteers or council staff.

• Workshops for community groups.

As a horticultural trainer, Mark has run short courses and workshops to do with Bush Regeneration, for volunteers, trainees and staff since 1991 and often gives talks to garden clubs and community groups. Qualifications include; Horticulture, Bush Regeneration, Volunteer Management, Train the Trainer & Train Small Groups.
